Composting FAQs

What materials can I compost at home?

Most fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells, tea leaves, garden clippings, dried leaves, and grass cuttings are compostable. Avoid composting meat, dairy, cooked foods, or oily products, as these can attract pests and slow the composting process.

How long does the composting process take?

Composting time varies based on your method and materials. With regular turning and the right mix of greens and browns, home compost can be ready in as little as 2–4 months, but it often takes 6 months to a year for finished compost.

Why does my compost smell bad?

A smelly compost tumbler is usually too wet, lacks enough air, or has too many food scraps and not enough dry material. To fix this, turn your tumbler more regularly, add more dry leaves or shredded paper, and ensure you are not adding meat or dairy.

Why do I need to turn my compost?

Turning your compost tumbler helps get air into the pile, which speeds up decomposition and reduces odours. For most home bins, turning your tumbler several times a week is ideal.

hat’s the best way to use finished compost in the garden?

Spread finished compost over garden beds, mix it into potting soil, or use it as mulch around trees and shrubs. Compost improves soil structure, adds nutrients, and helps your plants grow healthier.
